Importing data
In the second tutorial video, a trial balance is imported into nunia. You see how the file is read and checked, how nunia maps the accounts to the items of the balance sheet and income statement, and how the prior year is added as its own financial year.

Introduction
Welcome to nunia. In this short video we import a trial balance together, and you will see how your figures become a clean starting point for the closing.
Reading in the file
We start in the sidebar under “Preparation” and open “Data import and mapping”. An import always belongs to an engagement and a financial year. At the top right you see which client and which year you are working on – here Muster Bau AG, financial year 2025.
The year overview shows one row per financial year. Simply drag the trial balance into the field for that year – as CSV, Excel or PDF. For a PDF, nunia first reads the text layer directly; only if there is none does AI recognition step in.
Checking columns
Before saving, nunia checks with you: Are the file type and year correct? Here thirty-three accounts were found. Under “Check columns” you see how the file was read: account number, description, balance. If needed, you reassign a column, for PDF just as for Excel. If all is well, you apply the import. The row now shows a green tick: thirty-three accounts, as at 31 December 2025.
Mapping accounts
With “Check mapping” we open the assignment. nunia maps each account via the SME chart of accounts to an item of the balance sheet and income statement. If your chart of accounts differs from the SME standard, tick the box here – then nunia assigns by account description. Expand an item to see the individual accounts. If an assignment is wrong, change it via the dropdown or drag the account to a different item.
If the balance sheet does not balance or a sign looks unusual, nunia shows this openly instead of silently correcting. Here the totals agree: assets equal liabilities and equity. Finally, you confirm the mapping approval – only then can the financial statements be prepared.
Prior year and non-calendar financial year
For the prior-year comparison, you add the prior year as its own financial year. nunia asks for the reporting period, prefilled with the calendar year. Non-calendar, long or short financial years you enter here with “from” and “to”. Then drag the prior year’s trial balance into the new row. Each year is imported and checked separately – so the prior-year figures come from their own file, not from a side column.
Summary
That was the import. The figures are checked and assigned, and the financial statements put reporting year and prior year side by side. Next, the financial statements under the CO. See you soon.

Frequently asked questions
Which file formats does nunia read?
The trial balance can be read in as CSV, Excel or PDF. For a PDF, nunia first reads the text layer; only if there is none does AI recognition step in.
What happens if my chart of accounts does not follow the SME chart of accounts?
Then you tick the box for a different chart of accounts in the mapping, and nunia assigns the accounts by their description. You can change any assignment afterwards.
Does nunia correct signs or differences itself?
No. If the balance sheet does not balance or a sign looks unusual, nunia shows this openly instead of silently correcting.
Where do the prior-year figures come from?
The prior year is imported and checked as its own financial year. So the prior-year figures come from their own file and not from a side column.
