nunia for Abacus users: financial statements and closing from the Abacus trial balance
As at: · fastview ag, Suhr
Professionally responsible: Marco Zanetti and Reto Ackermann, fiduciaries and auditors, fastview ag
If you keep your clients’ accounts in Abacus, you can prepare the closing in nunia: Abacus remains the accounting program, nunia takes over the trial balance and turns it into financial statements, notes, closing file and general meeting documents. There is no interface or partnership; the route is via an exported file. This page shows what matters when exporting from Abacus and what nunia takes care of afterwards.

nunia is not a bookkeeping system and does not replace Abacus. It starts where the accounts are closed and accompanies the closing through to the general meeting. What this process looks like as a whole is described in Year-end closing in Switzerland.
Exporting the trial balance from Abacus
In Abacus the trial balance is a report of the financial accounting. How you call it up in the Abacus version you use and save it as a file is described in the Abacus documentation; menus and labels may differ by version and setup. What counts for nunia is the result:
- reporting date equal to the balance sheet date, after all closing entries
- all balance sheet and income statement accounts in one file
- per line: account number, name and balance, or debit and credit separately
- preferably as Excel or CSV; a PDF with a text layer also works
- one file per financial year, including for the prior year
What a trial balance contains and how it differs from the journal, account sheet and balance sheet is explained on its own page.
What nunia looks out for in Abacus exports
The import rules apply equally to all files; nunia has no program-specific settings. However, the import test series contains real trial balances from Abacus, and for these exports three rules are particularly important:
- Group and subtotals: account numbers in nunia have at least four digits. nunia never counts shorter numbers, such as group or level totals of a report, as accounts. So no total is counted twice.
- Account statements as PDF: for the fixed asset movement schedule and account reconciliation, nunia also reads account statements in addition to the trial balance. Recognised are, among others, a journal with the account number per line and an account sheet with the account as block heading and opening balance. If a line does not match the running balance, nunia reports this per account.
- Scans: if the trial balance is only available as a scanned PDF, AI text recognition transcribes the figures and recalculates printed subtotals. nunia reports deviating blocks instead of silently adjusting them. The AI runs via data centres in Europe (AWS Bedrock, Zurich) and can be switched off per firm.
If the chart of accounts follows the Swiss SME chart of accounts, nunia maps by account number; with a custom chart of accounts you tick the box for a different chart of accounts and nunia maps by name. nunia remembers corrections per client and applies them again in the following year. Rounding differences up to 50 centimes count as rounding; larger differences are shown openly by nunia.
Import into nunia
- Drag the file. Under “Data import and mapping” you drag the Abacus trial balance into the field of the financial year. Several years can be done at once; nunia proposes the year per file from the file name and saves only after your confirmation.
- Confirm the columns. Under “Check columns” you see which column was read as account number, name and balance and switch if necessary – for PDF exactly as for Excel.
- Check the mapping. Each account sits at an item of the balance sheet or income statement; change it via the selection field or by dragging.
- Approve. If the balance sheet and income statement balance, you grant the mapping approval. You then prepare the financial statements.
The import is shown in the tutorial video “Importing data”.
In the following year
In the second year the route gets shorter. The mappings you corrected for a client are applied again by nunia on the next import of the Abacus trial balance. The prior-year column comes from the prior year’s file; if something changes there retrospectively, nunia asks instead of silently taking over the figure. The GM minutes take over the constitution of the meeting, participants, agenda items and auditor from the prior year’s minutes – deliberately not the date, appropriation of profit and resolutions. Deadlines such as the general meeting and tax return are listed per engagement in the deadline calendar, on request also as a calendar subscription in Outlook, Google or Apple.
What is created in nunia after the import
From the approved mapping, nunia structures the balance sheet and income statement under Art. 959a and 959b CO and compiles the notes under Art. 959c CO; step by step under Preparing financial statements. In addition there are the cash flow statement, fixed asset movement schedule and statement of changes in equity, the PDF in five languages and in your firm’s corporate design. If you keep hidden reserves, nunia calculates the net release for the notes; more under Hidden reserves. For the general meeting, the GM minutes take over the appropriation of profit from the financial statements and the participants from the share register.

Frequently asked questions
Can nunia prepare the financial statements from an Abacus trial balance?
Yes. You export the trial balance from Abacus as Excel, CSV or PDF, import it into nunia, check the mapping and prepare the balance sheet, income statement and notes under the CO from it.
Is there an interface between Abacus and nunia?
Not yet. nunia reads the trial balance from an exported file; the accounts stay in Abacus. A direct interface to Abacus is in preparation, as are interfaces to Topal and Infoniqa; bexio is already connected directly (connection via sign-in with bexio, retrieval of trial balance and account statements per financial year).
Are group totals from the Abacus export counted twice?
No. nunia never counts numbers with fewer than four digits as accounts, and skips total lines such as “Total …”.
Is nunia a replacement for Abacus?
No. nunia is not a bookkeeping system but complements it in the closing: financial statements, closing file, GM minutes, share register and deadlines.
